The Urban Heat Island (UHI) Effect is a major environmental challenge across Pune, PCMC / Pimpri-Chinchwad, PMRDA, Mumbai, Ranjangaon & Shirur region due to rapid urbanization, industrialization, and loss of green cover, leading to rising temperatures, heat stress, and ecological degradation.
To mitigate this challenge, Tree Public Foundation is implementing scientifically planned Large-scale native afforestation by creating green belts & lungs along natural wind corridors entering the city areas, enabling cooler airflows to regulate urban microclimates and reduce heat accumulation.
These integrated interventions help reduce air ambient temperatures by approx. 0.5 - 1.5°C and surface temperatures by approx. 3–5°C in shaded urban areas through canopy shading and evapotranspiration; while improving air quality, groundwater recharge, biodiversity, and long-term urban climate resilience.
